this is not merely colour.

This is Colour Refined.

Nicholas Warren - colourist

As a freelance colourist specialising in remote colour grading, I combine the principles of colour science and perceptual image theory in pursuit of greater clarity within the image. By allowing its inherent qualities to emerge, grading becomes more than a technical exercise—it becomes a way of strengthening the viewer’s emotional connection to the story.

Colour Defined

Every image contains the potential to reveal a more complete expression of itself. Beneath the surface lies a visual character waiting to emerge. My role as a colourist is to thoughtfully guide that expression into its fullest form through the careful and tasteful application of colour, contrast, and tone.

Working within a robust colour-managed pipeline ensures the integrity of the image throughout the grading process, creating a solid technical foundation from which creative decisions can be made. This allows the final image to remain faithful to its intrinsic nature, while ensuring that the qualities established in the grade are preserved across every viewing environment and delivery format.

Colour Aligned

Considered look development gives an image the space to breathe and flourish, forming a vital part of the grading framework. It establishes a cohesive visual language across the project, ensuring that every creative decision supports the story being told.

Rooted in the most enduring lessons of photochemical filmmaking, this approach provides a richer and more nuanced foundation than off-the-shelf LUTs or one-size-fits-all workflows. Rather than chasing the aesthetic artefacts of the medium, it draws upon the qualities that made film so compelling in the first place, allowing the piece to develop a visual identity that feels authentic, intentional, and uniquely its own.

Building a Show LUT during pre-production allows the camera department to capture images that already embody the intended visual direction of the project. This creates a stronger foundation for the grade, ensuring consistency from acquisition through to final delivery.

For multi-camera live productions, this same approach enables a crafted visual language to exist from the moment the image is captured. Carefully developed LUTs bring cohesion and intent to every camera, allowing programmes to be vision mixed from images that already carry the signature look and atmosphere of the finished piece.

Colour Refined

With the critical foundations of colour management and look development already in place, the process of grading becomes a natural and almost effortless discussion with the image, allowing its final nuances to emerge and enabling that last 10% of its potential to be realised.

Without this groundwork, much of the grading process can become an exercise in correction — spending valuable time bringing an image to a point that thoughtful preparation should have established from the outset. In doing so, opportunities for genuine refinement are often lost.

This is the essence of Colour Refined. Not simply making an image look better, but creating the conditions in which its inherent qualities can fully emerge. When the foundations are sound and the visual direction is clear, grading is no longer about fixing problems — it is about pursuing excellence in every frame.
